| In 1978 Father Stevan established the concept of the first of its kind a
Day Camp for our church school children. For the past 27 years hundreds of
children have benefited from this camp. It is held in June for one full week
after regular schools are out. Parents, teachers, staff, supportive parishioners
and volunteers help to make camp so successful. Fr. Stevan along with +Mary Zlatovich met and formed the foundation to
which camp is still based today. Children begin each morning with morning
prayers. They then proceed to have the lesson of the day presented by Father
Stevan. Some of the subjects studied have been about Serbian history, customs,
songs, language, and our Serbian traditions. Through the generous donations from
our various church organizations and parishioners many afternoon activities have
taken place. They went to the Serbian Diocese, an all day trip to our Orthodox
Churches in Ohio, and Camp Nazareth. Swimming, movies, Lakewood park, water
slides, miniature golfing, amusement parks and camp tradition,- Lake Tomahawk.
Each day concludes with evening prayers.
We have held educational programs sponsored by the Boys Scouts, CPR
Courses, Orthodox nuns who taught us how to make prayer beads, t-shirt
demonstrations, a hypnotist and a magician just to name a few.
There is always a craft in the works that children are proud to show off
at the end of the day. One of the special activities started, when Father Stevan
taught the children how to make naphora. This has also become camp tradition
since you can make it and eat it too!
We are now at a point where our original campers are now sending their
children. Parents are able to see that nothing has really changed. Christian
fellowship, camp traditions, and many more memories are a cherished part of what
makes Day Camp as successful as it is today.
